Consistency and success

The key to success is always thinking about the long game. That can be applied to any aspect of your life work, relationship, health or friendships. You need to apply yourself, put effort in and make time for things that are most important to you. There is no way around it changes are hard, particularly when it comes to your lifestyle. Changing habits and behaviours take time, effort and consistency. The secret to success is doing things over and over again. There is no magic pill or quick fix when it comes to your health and fitness! For success we need to do the work. I know you were hoping I was going to give you another magic quick fix remedy or shake diet…Nope sorry I go for the longterm sustainable approach.  Are you bouncing from one fad diet to the next? one fitness programme or class to the next? spending ÂŁ1000s and just becoming more and more frustrated and disheartened! I get it I work with women like this in my studio everyday.

I never tell clients who come to our personal training studio in Edinburgh that their goals will be achieved without hard work or dedication. I do however explain that its about small changes on a weekly basis that will create the long term results. We are not in a sprint, we are changing our habits and behaviours over time. For you to see real changes you need to be consistent in changing your habits or behaviours for a minimum of six months. How many of you reading this have been consistent for six months? If you have thats great but I can guarantee not many of you are.

We know its difficult to be consistent 

Many of us find it difficult to be consistent in our health and fitness. In January we are all normally hyped up  saying ” this is the year I am going to be healthier” but  something gets in the way for example: work projects, kids events, family or you lose motivation due to  not getting the results you wanted or you might be impatient. I am going to be honest here changing your habits and behaviours over a period of time is what works.

If you are not consistent then I hate to say it there wont be any results… Sorry but its the truth 

Clients that work with us changes in their health and lifestyle become habitual and a way of life.  You need to embrace consistency and prioritise your health. Like life we have many ups and downs your health and fitness journey is no different! push through the barriers and don’t go back to your old ways. Keep pushing forwards and create a happier healthier you. It is worth it trust me.

Are you ready to change? 

Do you have the burning desire to make changes to your lifestyle? ready to embrace change? at our studio we get to the real reason of why its important for you to achieve your goals. We need to find your why for example people always say ” I want to get fit” ” I want to drop a dress size” but theres always an inner deeper reason for that. It might be that  you might want to look good in a dress at a special occasion or you feel that it affects your mood or you want to be a role model for your children. I get it I really do! Thats why we spend time with our clients during an initial consultation getting to know our clients more than just surface level.

You need to keep things plain and simple

Just take small steps to avoid overwhelm! if you create overwhelm then you really will want to quit before you have even started. I would pick small goals to start with, things that can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. Here are some examples

  1. Drink 2-3 Litres of water per day
  2. Three exercise sessions per week
  3. Eat protein at every meal
  4. Complete 10 mins of meditation daily

One task a week is fine just make sure that you implement it.

Believe in yourself 

You need to believe that you can make the changes, if you don’t believe in yourself then you probably will not be successful. You need to keep positive no matter how hard things get! You need to create the vision in your mind of where you want to be and go for it.

Tracking – Be honest with yourself 

Tracking your habits and behaviours by writing things down or logging things into an app will really help. It is not a one size fits all approach it needs to work for you. a small tool called Habitbull will help you break bad habits. Here is the link:  http://www.habitbull.com/. using a written food diary for everything you eat and drink this is a great way to track your nutrition. Try one of the above and stick to it.

Schedule – Failing to plan is planning to fail 

Modern life is so busy and its so easy for you to be distracted from your goals. Your exercise sessions need to be added to the diary. If it is  not scheduled it wont happen. Trust me on this one and make sure you stay committed to the time for yourself! its crucial that it works well around your commitments or it becomes more a chore for you. It important that you designate time for yourself and be accountable. you will feel so much better for it.

Why people fail time and time again

People fail time and time again to get the results they want! they have tried diet after diet, plan after plan, programme after programme! The real reason for this they continually play the short game! You need to play the long game. If you don’t make long term changes in your habits and behaviours  back to the hamster wheel is! the same behaviours and habits! No further forwards
